Kororaa – Fedora without the headaches

After installing Fedora 15 got tired with installing additional software manually.

Then I came across Kororaa……. aย Linuxย distro based on fedora 15 that comes with either KDE or Gnome 3.

I chose the one with Gnome 3 and it was easy to install as fedora 15 but in addition to the core system it also installed other much needed software like libre office and VLC as default………… so less work for me.

Give it a try and see… its a big improvement on the standard Gnome 3 shell.

Use of Aliases in mysql where clause

Wanted to use an alias in a select statement’s where clause in one my mysql databases. But I continued to get errors when I used a code like this,

select fname firstname, lname lastname from tbl_student where firstname = ‘suren’;

So I did a little bit of digging. I have used the above style in oracle but for some reason in mysql it was giving and error. Then in mysql documentation I found that in mysql the where clause get executed first and then only the select clause aliases are created. So by the time the where clause is considered the aliases have not yet been created. That is what gives the error.

Solution I came up with is to use Having clause… there are no problems in using a alias in the having clause as it gets executed last in the query. Not sure how much this is costing on performance wise but it is a solution. Let me know if you find a better solution.

so the correct form for above query would be,

select fname firstname, lname lastname from tbl_student having firstname = ‘suren”;

Hope this helps and let me know if there is a better way to do this. thanks and have fun ๐Ÿ™‚

Install Fedora 15 with Gnome 3

I installed Gnome 3 as soon as it got released on my ubuntu 11.04 laptop and loved it instantly. Then I switched to the new versions of XFCEย and KDE desktop just to try them out.

All was going well.

Then I decided that I need gnome 3 again and looked around for a distro that comes with gnome 3 as default.

Two options were there SUSE and Fedora 15. chose Fedora over SUSE… no particular reason………

You can get Fedora 15 from the following link…

http://fedoraproject.org/get-fedora

Then you can use that ISO to create a bootable USB drive to try out fedora or install it easily by installing liveusb-creator software that can be downloaded from the following link…

Jquery Fancy Box – Issue in IE – How to fix?

I used jquery fancy box for displaying the contact box in the ocean dental web site and when I tested it using chrome, safari and firefox it was working without any issue. But when I tested using IE 7/ 8 it was not showing up properly. the fancy box has become smaller than the content on the page.

After trying to fix the issue by trying various css tricks and editing the stylesheets used by fancy box.

I found that the page that I am calling fancy box must have a specific doc type. after applying what is given in fancy box site it started working without any issue. If your like me and if you have just integrated fancy box by copieng from the demo you might also get this error, so to fix this use the following doc type on the page that your calling fancy box.

<code>

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd”&gt;
<html xmlns=”http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml&#8221; xml:lang=”en” lang=”en”>

</code>

Hope this will help. ๐Ÿ™‚
